This is becaiuse most lenders require a general contractor to not only oversee the work from start to finish on a building project, but also warrant the project in its entirety.  Banks, and most consumers like to have one point of contact as they are going through the building process as well as the same point of contact after completion in the event of an outstanding issue that needs to be resolved.
